China announces additional 34% tariffs on US goods

China has announced that it will impose additional tariffs of 34% on imports from the United States. This was reported by the official Xinhua news agency.

According to the Tariff Commission of the State Council of China, the duty will be imposed on all imported goods from the United States starting April 10. Beijing called Washington’s new duties “a typical unilateral step of intimidation”.

It also notes that the United States’ approach contradicts the rules of international trade and causes serious damage to the legitimate rights and interests of China.

“China calls on the United States to immediately cancel the unilateral tariff measures and resolve trade differences through consultations on equal, respectful and mutual principles,” the statement said.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce said that China has also filed a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization over the US tariffs.

As GMK Center reported earlier, on April 2, Donald Trump announced the introduction of large-scale customs tariffs against the country’s trading partners. Thus, the minimum basic tariff on imports from all countries will be 10%, which will come into effect on April 5 this year. In addition, starting April 9, individual reciprocal higher duties will be introduced for the countries with which the United States has the largest trade deficit. In particular, tariffs of 34% have been announced for China.

China, in turn, has promised to take retaliatory measures. The country’s Ministry of Commerce called the introduction of duties dangerous for both global supply chains and economic growth. For China, the total amount of fees will reach 54%, as imports from this country were previously subject to 20% duties.
